Healing Began with a Blank Page

There was a time when I never imagined writing would become such an important part of my life.
The truth is, I didn’t start writing because I wanted to become an author.
I started writing because I needed an outlet.
The past five years have been an emotional roller coaster. Losing my mom. Watching Bernard fight for his life. Learning to live with a “new normal” I never asked for. There were seasons when I felt overwhelmed by grief, uncertainty, and questions I couldn’t answer.
There were days I felt like I was losing my mind.
Days I didn’t think I was going to make it.
Days I was angry with God because I couldn’t understand why my life had taken the turn it did.
I carried so much inside that I didn’t know what to do with it.
So, I started writing.
At first, no one else was meant to read those words. They weren’t being written for a book or a blog. They were simply honest conversations between my heart and God. A place where I could pour out my fears, my frustrations, my tears, and my prayers.
Looking back, I can see that God was doing something I couldn’t see at the time.
He wasn’t just helping me write.
He was healing me.
Writing gave me the outlet I desperately needed, but it also became the place where my perspective slowly began to change. As I poured my heart onto the page, I found myself returning to God’s promises. My faith grew stronger. Hope slowly replaced despair. Little by little, I began to believe that my story wasn’t over.
What I thought was simply a coping mechanism became part of God’s healing process.
Then something unexpected happened.
The words that were helping heal my heart became stories I could share with others.
Those private moments of writing eventually became the A Life We Didn’t Expect Collection. Not because I had all the answers, but because I wanted people walking through their own unexpected chapters to know they weren’t alone.
If there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s this: God often meets us in the ordinary.
Sometimes healing begins in a counselor’s office.
Sometimes it begins during a walk.
Sometimes it begins through a conversation with a trusted friend.
And sometimes…
It begins with a blank page.
Maybe you’re carrying emotions you’ve kept bottled up for far too long. Maybe you’ve been trying to be strong for everyone else while quietly falling apart on the inside.
Can I encourage you to find an outlet?
It doesn’t have to be writing.
It might be journaling, painting, music, gardening, prayer, or simply sitting quietly with God each morning.
The outlet isn’t the goal.
Healing is.
And don’t be surprised if God uses the very thing that’s helping you heal today to encourage someone else tomorrow.
I never could have imagined that writing for my own healing would lead me here.
But that’s often how God works.
He takes our deepest pain and, in His time, transforms it into purpose.
A new normal is not the end of our story. It is simply the place where the next chapter begins.
