Keep Dating Each Other: Why Quality Time Still Matters
Somewhere along the way, couples can stop dating and start simply doing life together.
Bills need to be paid.
Work gets demanding.
Appointments fill the calendar.
Responsibilities pile up.
And before you know it, most of your conversations are about what needs to be done next.
Who is picking this up?
What time do we need to leave?
Did you pay that bill?
What do we need from the store?
Life becomes practical.
And if we are not careful, the relationship can start to feel practical too.
That is why I believe it is so important to keep dating each other.
Not because every date has to be romantic or elaborate.
Not because you need to spend a lot of money.
But because relationships need intentional time.
Dating Does Not Have to Be Expensive
Sometimes we hear the word “date” and immediately think about dinner reservations, tickets, weekend trips, or spending money we may not have.
But some of the best dates can be the simplest ones.
Taking a walk together.
Sitting outside and talking.
Getting ice cream.
Watching a movie with the phones put away.
Taking a drive with no real destination.
Cooking dinner together.
Sitting on the porch after a long day.
The cost of the date is not what makes it valuable.
The time you intentionally give each other does.
Relationships Need Attention
Love is important.
But relationships need more than love.
They need attention.
They need laughter.
They need conversation.
They need moments when you are not simply functioning as a team trying to get through the week.
You need moments when you remember that before all the responsibilities, all the schedules, and all the pressure…
you actually enjoyed spending time together.
Sometimes that is easy to forget when life gets busy.
But those little moments are part of what keeps a relationship connected.
The Memories Matter Later
This is something I believe we do not always think about while we are creating the memories.
We enjoy the moment, laugh together, take the picture, or go home after a simple date night.
But later, those memories can become more important than we ever expected.
The memories you create during the good times can help carry you through the hard ones.
Every relationship will face difficult seasons.
There will be times when life gets heavy.
Times when you are tired.
Times when circumstances test your patience, your faith, and even your connection to one another.
And sometimes, in those seasons, you need something to remind you of who you are together.
You remember the laughter.
The conversations.
The inside jokes.
The places you went.
The little adventures.
The nights when nothing extraordinary happened, but you were simply happy to be together.
Those memories can remind you that there is more to your relationship than the difficult season you are currently facing.
They can remind you why you chose each other.
They can remind you that hard times are part of the story, but they are not the entire story.
Ordinary Moments Can Become the Ones You Treasure Most
We often think the big moments will be the ones we remember.
Anniversaries.
Vacations.
Birthdays.
Special celebrations.
And yes, those matter.
But sometimes the memories that stay with us are much simpler.
A conversation in the car.
A walk after dinner.
Laughing until your stomach hurts over something no one else would understand.
Sharing dessert.
Sitting together in comfortable silence.
Those ordinary moments may not feel significant while they are happening.
But one day, they may become the memories you treasure most.
That is why quality time matters.
You are not just spending an evening together.
You are building a history together.
Keep Choosing Each Other
Relationships can easily become something we assume will always be there.
We know we love each other.
We know we are committed.
So we think that should be enough.
But intentionality matters.
Keep asking each other questions.
Keep laughing together.
Keep trying something new every once in a while.
Keep creating little traditions that belong only to the two of you.
Keep putting the phones down sometimes and giving each other your full attention.
Keep dating.
Not because your relationship is in trouble.
But because your relationship is worth continuing to invest in.
And when life gets hard, those moments of connection may become part of what helps you remember:
We have been through good seasons before.
We have laughed before.
We have found our way back to each other before.
And we can keep choosing each other now.
So keep making time.
Keep creating memories.
Even the simple ones.
Because sometimes the best date is not the one that costs the most.
It is the one where you gave each other something money cannot buy—your undivided time.
And one day, those ordinary moments may become some of the memories that remind you why your relationship is worth fighting for.
Reflection
When was the last time you and your spouse or partner spent intentional time together without talking about responsibilities?
What is one simple, inexpensive thing you could do together this week just to enjoy each other again?
You do not have to wait for a special occasion.
Sometimes the most meaningful memories begin with something as simple as:
“Let’s spend some time together.” ❤️
