Stop Trying to Become the Person You Used to Be

One of the greatest struggles after loss is trying to get back to who we were before everything happened.

We tell ourselves,

“I just want things to be the way they used to be.”

But sometimes…

There isn’t a way back.

Not because we’ve failed.

But because we’ve been changed by what we’ve lived through.

That realization can be painful.

But it can also be freeing.

Because the goal isn’t to become the person you used to be.

The goal is to allow God to meet you where you are today.

To heal the places that have been wounded.

To soften the places that have become hardened.

To remind you that your story isn’t defined by what you’ve lost.

Your story is still being written.

Healing Begins Here

Healing doesn’t begin when life goes back to normal.

Healing begins when we stop pretending nothing has changed.

When we acknowledge our losses.

When we recognize our grief.

When we stop measuring ourselves against who we used to be.

And when we trust that God is still present in the life we’re living today.

I’ve discovered that healing isn’t about getting my old life back.

It’s about finding hope in the life God has given me today.

Sometimes the life we didn’t expect…

Becomes the place where healing begins…

And hope slowly finds us again.

A Question for You

Have you ever found yourself grieving the person you used to be?

If so, you’re not alone.

I’d love to hear your story in the comments. Sometimes, simply putting words to our experience is the first step toward healing. Your story may also be the encouragement someone else needs today.

Scripture for Reflection

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”

— Isaiah 43:19

God doesn’t ask us to become who we used to be. He walks with us as we become who He is shaping us to be.

With gratitude,

Keisha Patrick

💛 A new normal is not the end of our story. It is simply the place where the next chapter begins.
