The Step That Changed Everything

There are moments in life when one decision feels overwhelming.

Not because it’s wrong.

But because it requires us to leave behind everything that’s comfortable.

After my mom passed away, my world changed almost overnight. Bernard and I were married just 46 days after her funeral, and four months later, we packed up our lives, left Pittsburgh, and moved to Georgia for a fresh start.

Leaving wasn’t easy.

We were leaving our family, our friends, and the place we had always called home. There were moments we wondered if we were doing the right thing.

When you’re standing in the middle of a major life change, you rarely have the benefit of knowing how the story will unfold. You simply take the next step and trust God with everything you can’t see.

At the time, I thought we were just moving to another state.

Looking back now, I realize God was doing so much more.

He brought incredible people into our lives. Friends who became like family.

He strengthened our marriage in ways we never expected.

When Bernard later faced a life-threatening medical emergency, we discovered just how much we needed each other. Walking through that difficult season didn’t weaken our marriage—it deepened it. It taught us what it truly means to lean on one another and on God.

There was something else I couldn’t have imagined.

Through my own pain and healing, I began writing.

What started as a way to process my grief eventually became my first book.

Then another.

Then another.

Those books eventually opened doors I never knew existed. Today, I have the privilege of encouraging people every day who are walking through their own unexpected chapters.

If someone had told me all of that the day we loaded the moving truck, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.

I thought we were simply moving to Georgia.

God was leading us into a completely different future.

That doesn’t mean every part of the journey has been easy.

Far from it.

But it reminds me that we don’t have to understand the entire plan before taking the next faithful step.

Sometimes we become so focused on what we’re leaving behind that we miss what God is preparing ahead.

Maybe you’re standing at your own crossroads today.

Perhaps it’s a new job.

A move.

A relationship.

A dream God keeps placing on your heart.

Or maybe it’s simply taking the first step after a season of heartbreak.

Whatever it is, don’t let fear convince you to stay where you are.

You may not understand where God is leading you today.

But one day, you may look back and realize He was faithfully guiding your story all along—even when you couldn’t see where the road would lead.

The step that feels uncomfortable today may become the one that changes everything.

A new normal is not the end of our story. It is simply the place where the next chapter begins.
