When Comparison Makes You Feel Like You’re Behind
Have you ever looked at someone else’s life and wondered…
“Why am I not there yet?”
Maybe you watched a friend get the promotion you wanted.
Someone else announced an engagement while you’re still praying for the right person.
Another family seems to have everything together while yours feels like it’s barely holding on.
Or perhaps you see someone else’s faith, success, or happiness and quietly wonder why your story looks so different.
Comparison has a way of making us believe we’re behind.
But what if we’re measuring our lives against the wrong standard?
One of the greatest traps comparison creates is that it convinces us everyone else is further ahead.
What we often forget is that we’re comparing our everyday reality to someone else’s highlight reel.
We don’t know the prayers they prayed.
The tears they cried.
The disappointments they endured.
The years they spent waiting.
Or the battles they fought when no one else was watching.
That’s why comparison is so dangerous.
It asks us to compare chapters that were never meant to be compared.
Someone else’s chapter 20 isn’t supposed to make you question your chapter 3.
God isn’t writing identical stories.
He’s writing yours.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us:
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” (NIV)
Notice it doesn’t say our time.
It says His time.
Sometimes we’re so focused on where we think we should be that we miss what God is doing right where we are.
Instead of asking,
“Why am I not where they are?”
Maybe the better question is,
“What is God teaching me in the chapter I’m living today?”
Every chapter has purpose.
Some chapters teach us patience.
Some teach us faith.
Some teach us perseverance.
Some prepare us for blessings we couldn’t yet carry.
And all of them are part of the story God is writing.
So today, instead of comparing your journey to someone else’s…
Celebrate where God has brought them.
Trust Him with where He’s leading you.
And remember:
Your story isn’t behind.
It’s still being written.
Reflection
Have you ever found yourself comparing your life to someone else’s?
Instead of focusing on someone else’s chapter, what is one thing God may be teaching you in the chapter you’re living today?
