When the Closure Never Comes
There is something in all of us that longs for an ending.
We want the conversation.
The apology.
The explanation.
We want someone to tell us why things happened the way they did so we can finally make sense of our pain.
We convince ourselves that if we could just have one more conversation…
If they would just acknowledge what happened…
If they would simply say, “I’m sorry…”
Then maybe we could finally move on.
But life doesn’t always give us that opportunity.
Sometimes the person who hurt us never apologizes.
Sometimes they don’t believe they did anything wrong.
Sometimes they may not even realize they hurt us.
And sometimes…
They’re no longer here.
That may be one of the hardest realities we ever have to accept.
Because we’re not only grieving what happened.
We’re grieving the ending we hoped for but never received.
For a long time, we can find ourselves waiting.
Waiting for the phone call.
Waiting for the apology.
Waiting for the explanation.
Waiting for closure.
But one day I realized something that changed the way I looked at healing.
If I’m waiting for someone else to give me closure, I’m allowing them to decide when my healing begins.
That’s a heavy burden to place in someone else’s hands.
It’s also a tremendous amount of control to give someone who may never choose—or may never even realize they need—to give you what you’re waiting for.
Think about that for a moment.
How long are you willing to allow someone else’s silence to determine your future?
That doesn’t mean what happened didn’t matter.
It doesn’t mean the hurt wasn’t real.
And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to pretend everything is okay.
It simply means your healing doesn’t have to depend on another person’s response.
I’ve learned that there comes a moment when we have to place our unanswered questions into God’s hands.
Not because we suddenly stop hurting.
Not because we’ve forgotten.
But because we trust that God can bring peace where life never gave us answers.
Isaiah 26:3 says:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” (NIV)
Notice that God’s promise isn’t based on having every answer.
It’s based on trusting Him.
Some of the greatest peace I’ve experienced hasn’t come from understanding everything that happened.
It came from realizing that I didn’t have to carry unanswered questions forever.
I could surrender them to the One who already knew the answers.
Maybe today you’re still waiting.
Waiting for someone to explain.
Waiting for someone to acknowledge your pain.
Waiting for closure.
If that’s you, I want to gently encourage you with this thought:
Sometimes the greatest step toward healing isn’t getting the answers you’ve been waiting for…
…it’s realizing that God’s peace is greater than the answers you may never receive.
That doesn’t mean the story ends the way you hoped.
But it does mean your story doesn’t have to stop because someone else never finished theirs.
Reflection
Is there an unanswered question, an apology, or a conversation you’ve been waiting for that you’ve never received?
What would it look like to place that unanswered chapter into God’s hands today and trust Him to lead you forward?
