Navigating the Fourth of July and the Memories It Brings
As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, I know many people are looking forward to celebrating with family and friends.
But I also know that for some of us, holidays can be complicated.
Because holidays have a way of bringing back memories.
They remind us of the people who should be here.
The traditions we used to have.
The life we thought we would still be living.
There have been holidays when I found myself smiling one moment and grieving the next. Moments when a song, a meal, a place, or even the sound of laughter brought back memories I wasn’t expecting.
And I’ve learned that triggers don’t mean we’re moving backward.
They mean we loved deeply.
They mean we remember.
They mean that the people we’ve lost, and the life we once knew, still matter to us.
If this holiday weekend feels a little heavier for you, please give yourself grace.
It’s okay to celebrate.
It’s okay to grieve.
And it’s okay to do both at the same time.
You don’t have to pretend you’re okay.
You don’t have to push your feelings away.
You only have to take the next moment as it comes.
As we enter this holiday weekend, my prayer is that you allow yourself to hold both the memories and the hope.
Because moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting.
It means learning how to carry our love, our grief, and our memories while continuing to live.
And remember this:
A new normal is not the end of our story. It is simply the place where the next chapter begins.
